What is Core Training?

Core training is meant to be a transformative process that affirms your calling in ministry and vocational health. It consists of four customizable chapters designed to compliment your ministry role.

Each chapter has a different focus, includes readings, assignments, cohort meetings, and mentorship:

  • Embracing Church
    What is your view of the local church? How does the local church bring unity and diversity to the Body of Christ? How do we create space for people to enter in and engage?

  • Engaging Culture
    What is your relationship with the broader culture? How do you communicate your redemptive relationship with Christ to the lost? How do you live as a sojourner in an alien land in a way that is redemptive and loving? Where are the growth edges that you need to embrace in regards to cultural engagement as a Christ follower?

  • Loving God
    How do you interact relationally with the Triune God? How do you communicate this relationship to other in the Body of Christ and with the lost? What Alliance distinctive set us apart, yet unify us from within? These are some of the questions we will grapple with as we pursue with tenacity our relationship with the Trinity, as we rest in our Sonship, and as we explore the theology that frames our worldview.

  • Nurturing Self
    What does healthy ministry look like? How did God uniquely create you and what role are you designed to play? What disciplines enrich your relationship with the Triune God? Work through questions & concepts like these during the Nurturing Self chapter.

All portable licensed workers within the Central Canadian District of the C&MA begin Core Training within their first year of ministry.

Core Training: What to Expect

core training engages workers as they progress through four chapters: Embracing Church, Engaging culture, Loving God, and Nurturing Self. In each chapter the worker will participate in:

Each worker will engage in reading a collection of challenging and rigorous books. Books will be discussed with mentors and in cohorts.

It is anticipated that Core Training will require approximately four hours per week. Churches/ministries are highly encouraged to allocate time in the workers weekly schedule to accommodate for this need.

Recognizing that each worker has different giftings and ministry context, Core Training is very customizable. Workers can complete the four chapters in one to three years.

To begin Core Training, the following prerequisites must be met:

  1. Portable license with the C&MA in Canada

  2. Vocational Ministry Placement

  3. Grip-Birkman Assessment completed

Each worker will have a mentor throughout Core Training who will speak into their ongoing development. They will meet monthly to foster a relationship that is supportive, intentional & healthy. 

Each worker will participate in an online cohort twice a month. Cohorts change as the chapters change.

Projects are designed to help the worker grow in the areas of KNOWING, BEING, and DOING. They are designed to allow freedom and space for the worker to grow in the uniqueness of who God created them to be.

Each worker will read through the entire Bible in a translation not previously read allowing God’s voice to be heard in fresh new ways.

Each worker will have a journal to write and explore new ideas and thoughts, to wrestle with engaging paradigms, and to hear the voice of God at work.

What is Ordination?

Ordination is the solemn observance whereby representatives of the church corporate, together with the Elders representing the local congregation, set apart and charge those persons whom God has called already and equipped for ministry, through the laying on of hands and the offering of prayer for spiritual empowerment. 

After completing Core Training, portable licensed workers can apply for ordination. This is not a mandatory development step for all workers.

“Core Training provided me with a healthy space to wrestle with some of the challenges and tensions that I’ve felt in ministry, and within the church. This enabled me to move forward in clarity and confidence, with direction and vision. It helped me more clearly see who God has created me to be and the calling he has placed on my life. 

The book list was diverse, the assignments were engaging, my own creativity was encouraged, and I loved how the whole process was highly relational. Instead of being an isolating process, the structure of the ordination program actually helped me become better connected. Although it was an intense year, the journey was shared with others. The structure was set up to allow thoughts and ideas to be bounced off each other in safe and supportive relationships. Being paired up with a mentor who has been able to speak wisdom and encouragement into my life and ministry has been an answer to prayer. 

I believe this type of structure reinforces how we all, especially as church leaders, should be living, learning and leading.”
