Executive Pastor
Full-time salaried position plus weekend responsibilities.
Position Summary:
Heritage Park Alliance Church – which supports a weekend attendance of roughly 1,000 people – believes that God has called us to be a loving community of fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ. We are passionate about connecting people to God, growing our faith, and serving local and global communities. We are an attractional church with a missional heart, and we are eager to grow.
The Executive Pastor will work closely with the Lead Pastor and the Board to facilitate the vision in line with agreed values. This requires a firm grasp on the purpose, values and strategy of HPAC and the ability to align staff and key leadership teams with its mission. The Executive Pastor will offer pastoral leadership to the congregation and the staff, and ensure that all of the systems, practices, and policies of the church responsibly and effectively support its ministry activities.
Qualifications: The position calls for a person who is visionary and creative in the ways and means of leading people to God. It calls for a leader who is highly relational and demonstrates proven ability to build teams and lead people to become fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ.
Overall we are looking for someone with the right character, competence, chemistry, and calling for this position.
The Executive Pastor should:
- Possess personal character that reflects the love and compassion of Jesus Christ
- Demonstrate a level of competence in leadership sufficient to stretch and lead a church of 1,000 into the future
- Enjoy a “chemistry” with the pastoral team and the support team
- Articulate a sense of the calling of God upon his or her life for this critical role on our team

- Feel comfortable operating in a computer-driven office environment with competency in using Microsoft Windows XP, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Email.
- Convey a determination to do whatever it takes to get the job done
- Be committed to team ministry, loyalty to fellow staff members, living under constituted authority, a Board of Elders, and a lead pastor.
- Become a member of Heritage Park Alliance Church and therefore agree with the statement of faith, policies and procedures of The Christian and Missionary Alliance in Canada and the Heritage Park Alliance Church.
Educational Requirements
Preferences:
- A Master’s degree from an accredited seminary.
- Ordination sustained by The Christian and Missionary Alliance in Canada.
- Five years of pastoral experience.
Responsibilities:
Administrator
When he wears the hat of “administrator” the Executive Pastor:
- Meets weekly with the Lead Pastor for the purpose of reporting, planning and evaluation in administration.
- Attends the monthly Board meetings and assists or leads Board projects or initiatives as requested, and serves on Board committees as required.
- Attends the monthly Operations Team meeting and assists or leads projects or initiatives as requested.
- Serve as primary staff interface with other significant teams.
Catalyst
When he wears the hat of “catalyst” the Executive Pastor helps envision, launch and empower new ministries. He challenges people to volunteer for ministry, seeks to improve ministry, and inspires as many people as possible to engage in vibrant kingdom work. The Catalyst networks ministries together to enhance effectiveness, seeks opportunities for members to live out the gospel, and creates strategic plans for the church.
- Work closely with the Lead Pastor to clarify vision, define goals and create strategies that will help us connect with God, grow in faith, and serve the world.
- Lead and implement strategic initiatives in fulfilling the vision and mission of the church.
- Develop and communicate those strategic initiatives to the pastoral staff and key lay volunteers.
- Lead strategically and plan effectively by working with the Lead Pastor in developing and implementing a plan for growing the church to 3,000 and beyond.
- Meets weekly with the Lead Pastor for the purpose of reporting, planning and evaluation.
- Meets quarterly with each ministry leader accountable to the Executive Pastor in order to set goals, inspire, encourage, and pray for them.
- Ensures that all staff members are giving oversight and encouragement to their assigned list of ministry leaders.
- Initiates and oversees an annual volunteer revolution emphasis with a view to recruiting more people for purposeful ministry
- Provides leadership in setting goals for each ministry in the church.
- Ensure staffing, facilities and programs are appropriately and effectively aligned to best meet our strategic goals.
- Projects future staff needs, making recommendations to the Lead Pastor regarding staff additions or changes in ministry responsibilities.
- Responsible for establishing yearly performance goals for his ministry and implementing strategies for their attainment through the power and direction of the Holy Spirit and prayer.
Mentor
When he wears the “mentor” hat the Executive Pastor helps supervise staff, encouraging them to fulfill their God-given potential, and evaluating job descriptions in cooperation with the lead pastor. This includes, but is not limited to, mentoring key staff, motivating, teaching, coaching, correcting, and exhorting staff members as deemed necessary. The Mentor and the Lead Pastor work hand in hand with the Board or its designate to recruit, hire and terminate staff. The Mentor may also help the Lead Pastor coordinate and lead staff meetings, planning days, and retreats.
- Meets as needed with all staff personnel under his direct supervision to provide support, encouragement, training, accountability and direction in their ministries.
- Maintains strong relationships with all HPAC staff to encourage growth spiritually, numerically, and evangelistically.
- In cooperation with the Lead Pastor, conducts a 12-month evaluation of all staff members and reviews the evaluation with each staff member in a one-on-one setting.
- Assists the pastoral staff in goal setting, planning, prioritizing and ministry implementation.
- Responsible for working with each staff member to maintain a balanced work schedule.
Pastor / Counsellor
As one of our pastors the Executive Pastor may be called upon to preach, conduct wedding and funerals, disciple, teach or preach.
- Maintain a highly effective working relationship with the staff, and ensure a high level of esprit de corps between pastors, directors, support staff, elders, and church members.
- Serve with the Board of Elders in providing general pastoral care and shepherding to our congregation.
- Develop opportunities for people to receive Christian counselling, and if his gift mix includes a passion and training for helping people in need, to exercise that gifting in the midst of our community.
- Work closely with the Pastor of Care Ministries to ensure that our people are well cared for.
- Shepherd the congregation by phone, email, letters, and in person.
- Perform weddings, funerals, baptisms, communion, etc., as requested.
- Prepare and preach sermons that are relevant and biblically sound with a view to building a loving community of fully devoted followers of Jesus.
- Prepare and teach inspirational and motivating lessons to various groups within our church.
Overseer
A key aspect of the Overseer function is to monitor ministry at Heritage Park with the Lead Pastor and governing board. The Overseer oversees all church ministries, managing ministry by delegated responsibility. A key aspect is that the Overseer implements the vision of the Lead Pastor and the Board and generally serves the church as second in command to the Lead Pastor.
The Executive Pastor is part of the Executive Leadership Team (Lead Pastor, Director of Admin, Executive Pastor) that oversees the day-to-day ministry of the church according to the high standards of the gospel, established plans, standard operating procedures, and any legal requirements that may apply.
- Ensures the achievement of goals by continuously monitoring performance.
- Help recruit and retain highly qualified individuals.
- Assist the Lead Pastor and the Board in developing and implementing plans, goals, and vision.
Qualifications:
Spiritual Gifts
The following spiritual gifts would be a definite asset: Leadership, Administration, Teaching.
Accountability: Reports directly to the Lead Pastor, and through him to the Board.
Budget: Established annually and approved by the Finance Committee, the Board of Elders, and ultimately the Membership of HPAC.
Salary: Established by the Board of Elders.
